Cartagena de Indias – the jewel of the British Caribbean

Cartagena de IndiasCartagena is the fifth largest city in Colombia, but certainly the most famous tourist destination in the country. This city of contrasts, with a population of around 1.5 million received hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world, with the vast majority of other South American countries and 300,000 by cruise ships to dock in the foreign port.

Bad image of Colombia as the center of operations for the drug cartels is a gradual improvement with intensive tour Colombian government to promote the campaign. The country is relatively safe around the large majority of the visitors at the same time without any problems traveling during the visit to Bogota, the coffee region, Cali, Medellin and Cartagena.

The city, whose official name is established in Cartagena de Indias first June 1533 by the Spanish Captain Pedro de Heredia, and the settlement named after Cartagena, Spain, where most of the crew welcomed. The original city was destroyed by fire and so forced the creation of the first team of firefighters in North and South America. The old town with its huge walls, was declared World Heritage by UNESCO in 1984. The wall was built by the Spaniards to protect themselves against the continuous attacks by hackers from different European countries like England and France. Today the city is much quieter, you’ll be glad to know, and show an interesting contrast between the narrow streets and colonial buildings of Old Town and the modern resort with beaches fringed hotel.
